No. EMDR therapy is a clinical mental health treatment provided by licensed therapists. Somatic EMDR is a body-based, nervous-system-focused approach I integrate into coaching. It draws on bilateral stimulation as a tool within a somatic, embodiment-based framework, but it is not therapy and is not a substitute for clinical mental health treatment.
Talk therapy works primarily through insight and conversation. Somatic EMDR works with the body: your nervous system, sensations, breath, and emotional responses. Stress and trauma patterns live in the body, not just the mind. Many women come to this work after years of talk therapy saying some version of: "I understand everything. I just can't seem to change it." That's the gap this work is designed for.
No. Most of the women I work with don't identify with the word "trauma" at all. Years of chronic stress, emotional suppression, self-abandonment, relational wounds, caregiving without rest, or simply being "the strong one" leave nervous system imprints, even without a single identifiable event. If your body feels stuck in fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown, this work can help.
Even though I am in Arizona, I only offer virtual coaching sessions for women across the globe. Somatic EMDR translates well to virtual work. Sessions are designed for that format from the start.
They're related but not the same. Therapy is clinical mental health treatment: diagnosis, conditions, licensed providers. Coaching is forward-focused work that helps you build awareness, regulate your nervous system, and create change. I'm a Master Certified Life Coach trained in Somatic EMDR, not a licensed therapist. If you need clinical care, please work with a therapist. Coaching can complement that work beautifully. It just doesn't replace it.
Honestly, it depends. Every nervous system has its own timeline. Some women feel meaningful shifts within the first few sessions. Others need more time to build safety and capacity before deeper work can happen. This isn't about speed. It's about going at the pace your body can actually integrate. Forcing a faster timeline is often what got many of us stuck in the first place.
This work isn't right for someone in active crisis, managing untreated severe mental illness, or looking for a quick fix. If you're already working with a therapist and stable in that care, Somatic EMDR coaching can be a powerful complement. If you're not stable enough for coaching yet, please prioritize clinical support first. This work will still be here when the foundation is in place.
